Mr. Zefeldt, Live Oak Elementary School
Q. Why did you become a teacher?
A. Growing up I liked school but it wasn't easy, so I thought it would be fun to help children learn and grow. Kids are full of energy, optimistic and fun!
Q. If you couldn't become a teacher, what other profession would you have chosen?
A. Because I had some health issues as a child, I always thought it would be fun to be a pediatrician or I'd want to be a computer programmer.
Q. Are you married? Do you have children?
A. Last November I got married to a woman I met on my college swim team. I have no children but I do have a puppy.
Q. What are some of your hobbies?
A. In the summer I enjoy doing triathlons. I also like to teach myself computer programming, playing video games, reading and baking bread. Most of my time is spent with my new puppy.
Q. If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?
A. I think the super powers we choose say something about us. I like to travel and I dislike commuting, so I'd like to be able to fly.
Q. Do you have any special talents?
A. Yes, I can juggle, I learned when I was younger by reading a book and practicing.
Q. How old are you and when is your birthday?
A. I am 29 3/4 years old and my birthday is on November 27.
Q. Do you enjoy teaching 3rd or 5th grade more?
A. When I teach 5th grade I learn so much and that is really cool. When I teach 3rd grade, I teach stuff that I already know. Kids are like sponges and its very cool to see them learning.
Q. What is your favorite food?
A. I think I'd have to say burritos and Mexican food is my favorite.
Q. What is your favorite sport to watch?
A. I like to watch football. I was an A's fan, but then my wife is a Giants fan so I realized I want ALL Bay area teams to win!
Q. What is your favorite holiday and why?
A. Thanksgiving is my favorite because its fun to be around my family, eat and it's close to my birthday.
Q. Do you have a favorite subject to teach?
A. Science is my favorite because you can dig deeper into it and discover cool things. Science is always changing.
Q. What is your favorite book of all time?
A. The Giving Tree is my favorite because it's simple but each time I read it, it means something different to me.
Q. What is your favorite movie of all time?
A. The old Star Wars movies are my favorite, I've seen them probably 50 times.
Q. If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go and why?
A. Europe! Because I've been to Central and South America but never to Europe and I even have relatives there.
Q. Do you have any pets?
A. I have an Australian Shepherd puppy named Barley
Q. If you could give us one piece of advice what would it be?
A. You can never, ever have too many friends and treat people nicely. Instead of having 1 best friend have lots of friends. Imagine what our school would be like if everyone was your friend? You'd have 600 friends!
Q. Can you tell us about your experience being nominated as the Teacher of the Year?
A. I was one of four teachers in the county to be nominated and so I had to go give a speech in front of 400 people. When they didn't choose me at first I felt so disappointed, embarrassed and sad, but I just smiled and clapped. Then I realized how great an honor it was to be nominated and I feel really great about it.
CONGRATULATIONS MR. ZEFELDT!!
