Here's a great idea for learning compound words from: thefirstgradesweetlife.blogspot.com. Using Unifix cubes (found at local teacher supply stores), write each part of several compound words in different colors. Next, break them up, put them in a bag, and have kids pick them out of the bag and put them together into appropriate words.
Another variation is to break all of the pieces up and then have the kids sort the colors and unscramble them to make a compound word.
