Toilet Paper Math

Math can be incorporated into so many fun things that your kids don't even know they're learning. Try this one from messforless.net. If you happen to have tons of toilet paper rolls in your garage like lots of us do, get them out and let your kids have a blast building towers. Then take a ball and take turns seeing how many rolls you can knock over. Have the kids count and then use the comparisons to talk about greater and less than. (Example: Kate knocked over 7. Ben knocked over 6. Which number is greater?) There are all kinds of possibilites and mathematical connections you can make from play. Try it out.

Incorporating movement into learning helps retention of information and is also a great way to keep active. Try this fun one from: trainupachildlearnaswego.blogspot.com

Using sidewalk chalk, draw 12 circles and number them in order from 1-12. Using dice, roll the numbers, add them together and then hop that many spaces. Spice it up each time by having your child hop on one foot, two feet, backwards, etc.

Bath Dominoes

Make bath time fun and use math skills at the same time, with this fun idea from parentteachplay.com.

You'll need 2-3 sheets of craft foam, scissors, and a permanent marker. Cut small rectangles from the craft foam. You'll need 28 rectangles of the same size. Use the marker to divide the dominoes in half with a line and then add the dots to create a set that starts with 0-0 and goes up to 6-6.

Once the dominoes are made, fill the tub with water and float the dominoes face down in the water. Each child will pick 7 dominoes and stick them on the wall in a row. The rest of the dominoes stay floating in the bath. One child goes first and places a domino up on the bath tub wall. The other child tries to find a domino from their hand that can fit on either end of the played domino. They can count the dots or match up the patterns. If a child can't find a piece that matches, they can draw one domino from the floating pile. If the piece works, they can play it. If not, they put it in their hand and play goes to the next child. The children keep playing until someone uses up all the pieces in their hand.

Math Chapter Books

Some kids have a tendency to either love math, or love reading, but not both.
Addition Family Eggs

Do you have a lot of plastic eggs floating around the house now that Easter is over? Put them to good use with these addition family eggs. (You could do the same for subtraction too!)

Use numbers 5 thru 20.

One side of the egg is for "=" and the target number.

The other side is for various addition problems that equal that number.

(If possible, use several eggs of the same color or use different colored halves for each problem to avoid making it too easy by just matching them by color.)

Put the addition problem halves on one side of the table and the answers on another.

Have the child pick a problem half and then find the matching answer half and put them together.

Basic Math Skills

Teachers will tell you that it's important for students to learn to count- not only by ones, but also by fives, and tens. To get your child to be able to visualize this- cut out several small, medium, and large sized circles and label them with ones, fives, and tens. Then together you can practice counting and adding up several numbers with your circles. For example, "How many tens go into the number 46?" or "How many fives go into the number "23?" This helps form a great base for more difficult functions like multiplication and division too!

Triangle Flash Cards

(Taken from: www.education.com)

In third grade, you can expect your child to work hard on mulitiplication, and probably division as well. The class will build on all that work in first and second grade on addition and subtraction, and now will take math facts to a new level. Want to help? Here is a great classroom-inspired game to help your child learn number concepts in multiplication and division.

What You Need:

Index Cards

Scissors

Marker

What You Do:

Create the Triangle Flash cards: Cut an index card into a triangle. In each of the corners of the flash card write numbers belonging to a multiplication/division fact. For example if you write 63 at the top of the triangle, you would write 7 in one corner and 9 in another. Continue creating all the multiplication/division facts through nines.

Play the game: Hold the card up for your child to see and place your thumb over one of the corners, covering a number. Your child should identify the number that is covered by recognizing the other uncovered numbers as part of the multiplication/division fact. Continue playing the game with the cards, varying which section you cover each time.

Keep a record: While playing, keep a list of facts that yout child misses, or has a harder time remembering. On a different day, go back and practice those facts, covering different numbers as a way to practice both multiplication and division.

What's going on? Multiplication and division are known as "inverse" operations: one "undoes" the other. When kids are struggling to remember their math facts, it can be easy for them to lose track of this relationship. Triangle cards help them move back and forth easily, so that they're doing two important steps at once: memorizing math facts, and understanding how they work together. And in the process, you can expect your child to enjoy their fun and novelty, too!

This is a fun way to introduce your kids to geometric shapes. You'll need a piece of wood, some black paint, push pins, hair bands, a hammer, and graph paper. Once you've painted the board and let it dry, take the graph paper and mark out even spaces. Push a pushpin in each dot just enough to leave a mark. Remove the paper, hammer in the pushpins and there you go- a geoboard! Give your kids some hairbands and let them experiment making shapes.

The first player tosses her stone on the "1" key. She then hops on an equation equal to 1 (for example, she might jump to the following keys: =, 1, +, 0 or =, 3, -, 2). Players use 1-footed hops when landing on odd numbers and zeroes, and 2-footed hops for even numbers and symbols. A player's turn continues until she makes a mistake, such as stepping on a line or hopping on an incorrect equation. The winner is the first person to work through all the numbers to 9.
